Cambridge is famous for its university. With an approximate population of over 100,000, the town sees many visitors every year. These visitors come not only because of the university, but there are many other events and reasons to visit the city. Some of the attractions include public events held yearly. Cambridge is home to the University of Cambridge, and is the home of several major festivals and sports clubs and events.

The University

The public research university at Cambridge is the second oldest university in the United Kingdom. It is one of the top academic universities in the entire world. Began in the early 1200s, today it offers six different schools of learning and 31 colleges.

Festivals

- Cambridge Folk Festival is three and a half days of music held every summer at Cherry Hinton Hall in the incorporated village of Cherry Hinton. The festival includes performances, in an arena area, Floor Singers stages, and impromptu performances by people in the audience.
- Cambridge Shakespeare Festival celebrates the works of Shakespeare with six weeks in July and August. Live music in Elizabethan style and authentic full-costumed performances happen outdoors on the grounds and gardens of the university.
- Cambridge Film Festival is a big annual event attended by people from all over the UK and the world. The festival features international films first shown at larger world film festivals.

Sports

- Football became an official game with rules at the university in 1848. Cambridge University members drew up the rules that have been official ever since. The first game with the new rules was played in Parker's Piece. The University was the major influence in forming rules for the Football Association in 1863. The city has two football clubs.
- Rugby football has a loyal following in the city. Cambridge is represented in both of the rugby codes.
- Cambridge University has a boat club. Rowing in bump races are major events for the university.

These and other sports such as tennis, cycling, baseball, motorcycle racing, and more, keep athletes busy in Cambridge and especially athletes from the university. The university also participates in varsity sports with Oxford University. International audiences watch these events.
